Location directory: sources and coverage

Our directory helps you select a real location, distinguish places with the same name and compare nearby towns. It is not a member directory and does not claim that any place has active members.

How places are selected

We use OpenStreetMap features explicitly tagged as a city or town, then match their names and coordinates to current populated-place records in GeoNames. We exclude neighbourhood, suburb, village, abandoned and historical classifications from the source selection. For United States and Canadian extracts, country membership is checked against geoBoundaries country polygons and available OpenStreetMap country-area records. Duplicate map features that identify the same GeoNames place are combined. Records we cannot confidently match are held for review rather than assigned a guessed region.

These are community-maintained geographic classifications, not a legal register of municipal status. Names, boundaries and tagging can be incomplete or outdated. “All” in regional navigation means all matched records in this directory, not a guarantee that every legally designated town is present. You can register with your actual town even if it is not listed here.
